The History Detectives
Inspiring Barrow Kickstart Programme has received funding for a further three years due to matched funding by Big The big Lottery Community Fund and BBC Children in Need at a national level. Locally the programme is supported by Cumbria Community Foundation.
This funding has allowed the programme to further expand to include three additional primary schools from neighbouring Dalton-in-Furness.
The Kickstart Programme now delivers to 15 primary schools and 5 secondary schools across the Furness area.
In September 2019 the programme will begin working with year 6 children to improve confidence, resilience, teamwork, communication and emotional resilience.
The programme finished the last academic year working with year 7 children on the Kickstart programme, but also piloted a programme with year 5 children called The History Detectives. Delivered by local historian Gill Jepson, this programme looked at the rise of Barrow in the Victorian age and the impact of the town’s early industrialists. A half term trip to Furness Abbey also allowed the children to explore the history of the ruins.
The History Detectives concluded their programme by performing a play they wrote themselves in front of 200 people at the year 7 celebration evening.
