New Kickstart and Mentoring Programmes

The New Year marks the start of a new cohort of Year 8 Students for the Kickstart Programme and the start of a Year 6 Mentoring Programme for year 6 students.

Year 6 children that have recently completed the Kickstart Programme ( Sept- Dec 2023 ) made significant progress in developing their Communication, Teamworking, Confidence, Resilience and Leadership Skills . To further support transition and preparation for Sat’s, a mentoring programme was offered to the schools.  Nine schools took up the offer: Barrow Island Community School, Ormsgill Nursery and Primary School, Dalton St Mary’s C of E Primary School, South Walney Junior School , St Georges’ C of E Primary School, Victoria Academy Primary School, Newton Academy School,  St James’ C of E  Primary School and Our Lady of The Rosary Catholic Primary School .

Volunteer Mentors were recruited primarily from Bae Stem ambassadors and trainings and materials provided . The Mentors begin working with their Mentees in January and will support until the end of May and possibly beyond.

The Year 8 programme gets underway in January with a meet and Greet with children and Parents on January 17th. The programme will be working with Furness Academy, Chetwynde School, Dowdales, and Ulverston Victoria High School.

The programme will once again look to develop the life skills that are essential to personal growth but will also challenge the children to develop a community campaign to offer support to others in the Furness area. The campaign will be driven by the children and reflect issues that are important to them.
